Protect yourself with more than sun cream this holiday

We understand that on average our clients jet off on holiday over three times a year. Some of our best memories are made with family and friends on holiday, where we can escape from the everyday rat-race and enjoy rare quality time together.

Most holidaymakers embark on their travels with the expectation that they will endure nothing more serious than an awkward tan line, but for some travelling abroad it isn’t always fine wine and sunshine. In 2015, a whopping two-fifths of British travellers had their possessions stolen abroad, with more than 20,000 reporting a lost or stolen passport, and in the past three years, an estimated 4.4 million British travellers sustained injuries on trips abroad.

To ensure your happy holiday memories are not dampened by a stressful event, we would like to share some tips to ensure you are well prepared if one of these unfortunate events happens to you.

Firstly, always store your documents such as passports, visas and driving licenses safely and securely, preferably in your hotel locker or if you are required to keep them with you, make sure they are not visible.

Take copies of all your travel document with you when you are abroad. For instance, if you get injured or sick you may need personal identification, your insurance policy and/or vaccination certificates. Or if you find your passport lost or stolen then you will be able to replace your passport much faster if you have photocopies of your passport and visa.

While it is advised to have photocopies of some of your travel documents, carrying copies of your travel documents isn’t always enough or the safest option, and can take up space and be aggravating. These are crucial documents and if stolen, they could leave you vulnerable to identity theft. Besides the fact that these documents could get damaged or lost with the originals and leave you in the same situation. Digital copies are invincible.

Your FileSafe cloud is the perfect safe and secure space to store your travel documents digitally. Your data is hosted in the UK with the highest level of security available, so you’ll have total peace of mind.

FileSafe is also quickly accessible to you anywhere in the world if you have an internet connection. To find Wi-Fi spots wherever you are, download the Wi-Fi Finder app (available on Android or Apple) before you go abroad. When you install and first run this app, it downloads a database of free and paid Wi-Fi hotspots around the world. You can then open the app when you don’t have an Internet connection and use it offline. The app will use your GPS location and show nearby free Wi-Fi hotspots on a map.

One of the most valuable things you can do prior to your holiday is to scan or upload all your important travel documents to your FileSafe cloud, such as:

  • Passport (the identification page)
  • Visa
  • Passport photos of yourself
  • Travel insurance documents and contact numbers
  • Driver’s license
  • Credit cards and contact numbers
  • Travel itinerary
  • Airline tickets
  • Hotel or accommodation reservation confirmations
  • Car rental reservation confirmation
  • Cruise tickets
  • Vaccination certificates (Some countries require a vaccination certificate for specific infectious diseases. For example, travellers entering Venezuela from certain countries are required to show a current yellow fever vaccination certificate.)
  • Any other pre-paid confirmations

If you don't have a home scanner a great app to have on your smartphone is Evernote Scannable (available on Apple or the Android),  this enables you to easily use your phone camera to scan documents to send or save.

At Capital, your happiness and wellbeing is our number one priority. We hope, wherever your travels take you this year, you have a happy, safe and memorable (for all the right reasons!) time.
