I grew up in a small town in the South Wales valleys, which was a world away from the hustle and bustle of London. Since turning 18, I have lived in four big cities, so I think I can handle the city life – even if I still struggle to avoid bumping into at least five people on my walk to work during rush hour.
I studied International Business and French at university. This was a demanding and diverse degree that included a placement year in France, where I furthered my education in EDHEC in Lille and then worked in central Paris. If you need any tips on bars, restaurants, parks or galleries in Paris, just let me know!
Although I enjoyed every minute of studying abroad – especially living off bread, cheese and wine while in France – the incredible diversity in the subject modules I undertook made it difficult to focus on one particular career direction.
I came to realise that I was most enthusiastic about my finance modules and worked noticeably harder when a subject involved finance, which I figured meant that it would be a career I would enjoy. I therefore made the big decision to angle my career towards financial services.
After graduating, I completed a summer internship at an intraday trading firm, which resulted in gaining a Diploma in Trading and Financial Market Analysis. This was a real eye-opening insight into the craziness that can be the financial markets as I executed trades in equities, commodities, bonds, oil and currencies in real-time.
Following this, I worked from home conducting research and analysis on a small market sector, searching for opportunities to invest. I am naturally an analytical person; however, I was being constantly prompted by a need to see the bigger picture behind all of the numbers. I, therefore, decided to move towards a career within a Lifestyle Financial Planning firm, feeling it would suit my personal interests and career goals.
Joining the Capital team in July 2019 has given me clarity and focus; I am now confident about where I’d like to be in my professional career. Working in financial services with a company that puts clients and their families at the heart of everything they do, bringing peace of mind to all, can be a rare thing to find; but I truly believe that I have found this here at Capital.
As a Client Services Administrator, I strive to make sure that all back of house duties, such as trades and new business submissions, are processed efficiently and with as much attention and care as possible, and hope to one day become the first point of contact for some of Capital’s clients.
Outside of office hours, you can find me on a golf course, at the gym (sometimes) or the total opposite of this, trying out new cocktail bars and restaurants and visiting friends and family back in Wales.
I try to set myself a yearly challenge to push myself out of my comfort zone and have something to stay extra motivated for. So far, I have taken part in an abseil down a university building, a 10k race, and later this year, I will be taking part in my first half marathon. I am motivated to complete all of these by raising money and awareness for amazing charities. I hope to continue to push onto even bigger and better challenges, both personally and professionally, and I’m super excited to see what is next for me whilst working at Capital.
