Happy Christmas from the Capital Asset Management team
21.12.12
First of all, if you are reading this it means the Mayan Calendar Prophecy was wrong, and the world didn’t end. This would concur with our general view that if you are making any kind of prophecy or prediction you are likely to get it wrong. Well let’s hope so, in this case anyway! It’s been another whirlwind year and I can’t believe how fast it seems to have gone (I am told this is a clear sign of getting older!).

The folly of making predictions
21.12.12
The holiday season encourages media to make wild predictions about financial markets. We think its fun to match these up with what people were saying a year before. The Mail ran a story at the beginning of this year, with various predictions from investment ‘specialists’. Many predicted a very poor year for markets, estimating the FTSE 100 index to end the year at 5000 - as I write this article, it is actually hovering just under 6000. So much for experts and their predictions!

In the media
13.12.12
Alan Smith our CEO recently wrote in the New Model Adviser, commenting on the importance of taking into consideration failed funds when doing performance analysis. “…Survivorship bias can lead to over-optimistic beliefs because failures are ignored, such as when companies that no longer exist are excluded from analyses of financial performance. It can also lead to the false belief that the successes have a special property, rather than being just lucky."

Insuring your future
13.12.12
In the words of equal rights campaigner Karen Lamb: "A year from now you will wish you had started today." Against the backdrop of an ongoing global economic crisis, the insurance industry has proven to be largely resilient, but that is not to say there are not significant challenges to confront and important implications for (re)insurance industry executives when it comes to their personal finances.

Summary of the Autumn Statement
07.12.12
Despite the weeks of speculation, the Chancellor's Autumn Statement was simply that - an assessment of where we are in economic and financial terms. It was not a mini-Budget as many have described it. As the Treasury begins to release the fine print, as always, the “devil will be in the detail”.

HMRC targets London based legal professionals
22.11.12
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has recently launched a series of new task forces to tackle tax dodgers, including one targeting the legal profession in London. It is expected that the new task force is to recover more than £19.5m from tax dodgers. HMRC describes them as “specialist teams that undertake intensive bursts of activity in specific high-risk trade sectors and locations in the UK”.

Retiring soon? Act fast!
07.11.12
On 21 December 2012, the EU Gender Directive comes into force for individual pensions. From this date, annuity providers will no longer be able to offer different pension rates for men and women. This is bad news for men who have traditionally received a higher annual annuity income than women, due to their lower life expectancy. The new Directive is likely to reduce the pension income of men retiring after 20 December this year.

Take advantage of this evolving IHT planning solution
07.11.12
When it comes to inheritance tax (IHT) planning solutions, Business Property Relief (BPR) has steadily grown as a more mainstream option in recent years. Originally designed for entrepreneurs passing on family businesses, BPR delivers full relief from IHT on qualifying companies owned for at least two years. It is through portfolios of Alternative Investment Market (AIM) stocks and unquoted company shares that it has become a highly accessible option for a much wider number of people.

In the media
06.11.12
We are very committed to the development of the financial services profession and often comment on financial related matters in the national press.
“…back to the office for another client review meeting. This is particularly enjoyable as the client is one of the first we took through the FutureMap™ process when we launched it some five years ago. He is now planning to take retirement a full eight years early and excitedly explained his plans as he begins the next exciting chapter of his life.”

Team ‘Away Day’
05.11.12
We like to embrace the 'work hard, play hard' philosophy, so every year we get together as a team for a day out to let our hair down. It’s a wonderful opportunity for everyone to recharge their batteries and to take a well deserved break - far removed from the challenges of investments, pensions and taxation.

What is the RDR and what does it really mean?
02.11.12
You might be aware of the impending changes to the personal financial advice landscape due to be introduced in January 2013. Under the rather cumbersome title of the Retail Distribution Review (RDR) the new rules represent some pretty significant changes to the way financial advice is delivered and paid for. As a business, we are pleased to be ahead of the curve.

Should you trust the Bar Room Genius?
02.11.12
As a topic of conversation, investment is like sports. Everyone has an opinion, but the one that shouts the loudest often spends most their time in front of the TV, rather than out on the pitch.
Indeed it's one of life's ironies, people who know the least about a subject tend to sound the most sure of themselves. When it comes to investing these are the ones who prop up bars telling anyone who will listen that they have found the path to certain wealth. These Pub Philosophers have their standard story and adapt the facts to fit. Be wary, some even end up writing newspaper columns or hosting television shows. -
